Why Personal Portfolio Matters

As a professor teaching web design course, I’ve found that one of the most impactful projects for my students is creating their own personal portfolio. It’s not just an assignment — it’s a gateway to discovering their strengths and stepping into the digital world.

When I give this assessment, I always tell my students: “This portfolio is your story. It’s your chance to showcase what makes you unique.” And to help them get started, I suggest they browse Google Images for inspiration. There’s so much creativity out there, and it’s a great way to spark ideas.

But here’s where it gets practical. I ask them to upload their portfolios on GitHub and host them on GitHub Pages. Why? Because it’s a simple and effective way to make their work accessible to anyone, anywhere. I also encourage them to buy a domain name — something that costs less than a meal — and link it to their portfolio. Imagine having yourname .com on your resume! It speaks volumes before you even say a word.

I’ve seen firsthand how this exercise boosts their confidence and helps them stand out in the professional world. It’s more than just an online presence; it’s a digital resume that opens doors.

So, what about you?

Do you have a personal portfolio?

If not, what’s stopping you from creating one?

Share your thoughts or experiences in the comments — I’d love to hear how you’re showcasing your work!
